Samsung Galaxy A54 full review

The Samsung Galaxy A5x series, particularly the A54, has consistently been the best-selling mid-range smartphone for Samsung. Its popularity may stem from the opportunity to own a Samsung device without the high cost of the Galaxy S series. The A54 maintains Samsung’s recognizable design, aligning with the company’s 2023 smartphone lineup. However, our exploration into its appeal goes beyond brand recognition. In our extended use of the Galaxy A54, we aim to uncover whether its features and price create a winning combination. Despite high expectations, our long-term review reveals that the A54 falls short of being the mid-range smartphone of the year. Join us as we delve into its user experience and clarify what you can truly expect from this device.

Design, handling

The Galaxy A54, a 2023 Samsung model, bears a distinct Samsung design, resembling the more expensive S series. The intentional choice of maintaining a similar look across devices, including the three camera circles, reflects Samsung’s user-friendly approach. However, the design, while not inherently good or bad, feels overdone and lacks uniqueness.

On the back, the phone may appear more expensive than it is, but the front bezel design clearly signals its mid-range status. The slippery feel of the phone, coupled with a plastic frame, contributes to a less premium impression. The handling is suitable for larger hands but becomes unwieldy for those with mid-size or small hands due to its width.

The phone’s weight is on the borderline of concern, noticeable in the pocket. The minimalist packaging, similar to Samsung’s approach, provides only the phone and a cable, omitting a case and charger. This contrasts with Chinese competitors who typically include both in the box.

Despite its generic and safe design, the Galaxy A54 may come across as boring to some users. It seamlessly integrates into daily life without leaving a lasting impression, catering to those who prefer a device that “gets out of your way and lets you live your life.”

Speaker

The A54 has dual speakers that work adequately, but they are not top-tier in terms of quality. They perform decently, especially in quieter environments, though they may require bringing the phone closer in noisy surroundings. The top speaker’s single opening through the earpiece affects sound richness. Compared to some models like the Poco F5 with a separate opening, the A54’s speakers are not as loud or impressive, but the difference is minimal. While not disappointing, the A54’s speakers lack a wow factor in any aspect.

Vibration motor

The A54’s vibration motor is functional but unremarkable. While it surpasses the Poco F5’s motor marginally, both feel somewhat two-dimensional. Despite having slightly more intensity, it falls short of the quality found in phones with superior vibration motors. Customization options are a positive aspect, with separate sliders for various vibrations, though due to the motor’s weakness, maximum settings are necessary. The ability to enable or disable vibrations for different interactions is appreciated. Samsung’s acknowledgment of the motor’s weakness is reflected in the “Vibration sound for incoming calls” setting, adding a sound to compensate for the lack of motor strength. Overall, the motor is not likely to impress users accustomed to more robust vibration experiences.

Colors

Samsung Galaxy A54

The A54 boasts an impressive screen, a standout feature alongside its commendable battery life. Samsung’s commitment to screen quality is evident in the A54’s panel, which may not be high-end but is accurate and great. Samsung’s color settings, including Natural and Vivid, offer excellent tuning options without unnecessary complexity.

Brightness

In terms of brightness, the A54 reaches around 1,000 nits at its peak, sufficient for most viewing conditions, even on sunny days. While it falls short of record-breaking brightness, it’s a notable improvement over its predecessor, now 150 nits brighter. The Extra dim feature addresses the issue of insufficient dimness at the lowest brightness setting, offering a separate slider for further dimming.

Refresh Rate

The A54 supports a maximum 120 Hz refresh rate, best experienced with the Adaptive setting. However, the 120 Hz experience may not match that of other phones, as choppiness and lag are noticeable throughout the UI. While smoother than the Standard mode, the A54’s top refresh rate is still not entirely seamless, a topic explored further in the dedicated section. The Adaptive setting is recommended, considering the already great battery life and no compelling reason to opt for a lower refresh rate.
